“Invisible Cities” encourages the viewer to journey through the mental cities that comprise the landscape of the imagination. Deriving its name from Italo Calvino’s book containing stories told by Kublai Khan, Calvino describes 55 cities all named after women. These structures, cultures, and existences stretch the boundaries of reality.
The Invisible Cities exhibition responds to Calvino's work through exploration of urban themes that are distinct yet intertwined. This exhibit engages in many questions and stereotypes as well expands on the discourse surrounding how we construct the world we live in. How the perceptions of place are shaped by personal influences as diverse as memory, desire, and loss, as well as by cultural forces such as history and the media.
